A 25-year-old Burnaby woman was arrested in Alberta last week in the company of a murder suspect wanted on a Canada-wide warrant.

On Jan. 27, Airdrie, Alta. police had set up a speed trap and tried to stop a vehicle for speeding and illegal window tint, according to an RCMP news release.

"The traffic stop led to a further investigation indicative of proceeds of crime, and both the female driver and male passenger were arrested," stated the release.

But during the arrest, the male passenger got out of the vehicle and fled from police on foot.

A foot pursuit ensued, and police successfully apprehended the male.

A search revealed a loaded .40-calibre firearm on his person.

The man presented officers with fake identification, but police were able to determine his true identity and determine he was wanted on Canada-wide warrants for two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder, stemming from a 2018 homicide investigation in Toronto, Ont.

The male suspect was a minor at the time of charges, so his name cannot be published.

After the Alberta arrest, he was charged with five firearms offences, carrying a concealed weapon, three identity fraud charges, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, counterfeit money, and two counts of resisting or obstructing police officer.

Burnaby resident Alyssa Chand, 25, was the driver of the vehicle, according to police.

She has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and counterfeit money.

Chand was released on bail on Jan. 30. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 13 in Airdrie.
