Burnaby resident Navjit Moore has won a 2023 medal of good citizenship.

Burnaby resident Navjit Moore has won a provincial Medal of Good Citizenship for being a "pillar of compassion and service."

For almost a decade, Moore has volunteered with the Crohn's and Colitis Canada Fraser Valley East chapter, including as president, according to a government press release.

She led a new chapter in 2017 to expand its support for patients and loved ones affected by Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

Moore has served as a chair for the Gutsy Walk since 2018.

Her other volunteer pursuits include providing emotional care weekly at Burnaby's Fair Haven Homes since 2012, mentoring children aged five to 12 on healthy living for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, serving as a wayfinder at Burnaby Hospital, and sitting on a team that planned jump rope assemblies and events for thousands of B.C. elementary students.

During the pandemic, she handmade more than 300 personalized cards for Burnaby hospital patients and long-term care residents.

In 2020, Moore won a Canada's Volunteer Award from the federal government.

Moore, a UBC alumna with a bachelor of science and doctor of pharmacy, is also pursuing a medical degree.

"Moore is not just a volunteer; she is an advocate for positive change," said the release.

The province has honoured 21 people throughout B.C. with the medal for their "extraordinary contributions to community life."

The medal recognizes the winners' generosity, service and acts of selflessness in their local areas, according to the release.

"Each one of these medal recipients has made their community a better place," said Premier David Eby in a statement.

"They have shown kindness and generosity while making sacrifices for the benefit of others. Their contributions serve as a reminder to all of what we can do in ways large and small to improve life for everyone."
