Burnaby's newest ice rinks to host selection camp for this Indigenous hockey team

The Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre will welcome dozens of young athletes looking to represent B.C. at the 2025 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships.

The Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre has become a community hub for south Burnaby residents since it's official opening in May.

And, in 2025, it'll serve as the provincial scouting hub for one of hockey's most prestigious tournaments.

Dozens of young athletes will descend on Burnaby for Team BC's player selection camp for the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC), taking place in Kamloops in May 2025.

Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre — located at 7789 18th St. — is 92,000 sq. ft. in size, was built at a cost of $54 million and has two NHL-sized rinks.

It also has multi-purpose rooms that welcomed local Vancouver Canucks fans for viewing parties during the 2024 playoffs last spring.

The Team BC selection camp is organized by the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Council (I-SPARC).

By the end of the three-day event, 20 men and 20 women will be chosen to don the blue, gold and white at the NAHC.

"These players will not only represent B.C., but they will also proudly represent their Indigenous Nations and communities at this prestigious national championship."

Both B.C. teams captured bronze medals at the 2022 championships in Nova Scotia.

The 2025 selection camp in Burnaby is scheduled for March 28 to 30.
