Updated data shows COVID-19 is sweeping through Burnaby as officials continue to struggle to contain rapid transmission throughout the province.
According to the latest Geographic Distribution of COVID-19 by Local Health Area of Case Residence numbers for Dec. 19 to 25, 2021, Burnaby saw 799 new cases, up from 179 infections from Dec. 12 to 18, 2021.
The data is released by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).
Yesterday (Dec. 30), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 2,944 new cases had been discovered, which marked a new B.C. record.
But Henry also acknowledged on Dec. 29 that provincial caseloads could be four to five times higher than announced daily numbers.
In other local news, positivity and case rates have also soared in Burnaby's four quadrants from Dec. 16 to 22, 2021, BCCDC data showed.
Case rates are new cases per 100,000 people by local health area and community health service area.
