A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Burnaby Hospital.

Burnaby Hospital is now under a COVID-19 outbreak after 13 cases were detected.

In a declaration statement today (Jan. 12), Fraser Health says evidence of transmission has been found across three wards, including three cases involving patients in a surgical unit, eight patients in an acute care elders unit and two patients in a medicine unit.

All of the affected units of the hospital — located at 3935 Kincaid St. — are temporarily closed to admissions.

"Fraser Health has worked with the site to support the implementation of enhanced control measures," the authority explains.

"Fraser Health is also working with the site to identify anyone who may have been exposed, and is taking steps to protect the health of all staff, residents and families."

The authority adds it's notified all patients on the affected unites about each outbreak, and in addition, families of patients who are unable to share this information have been informed.

Fraser Health says the emergency department at Burnaby Hospital remains open.

As of this publication, there are five Burnaby long-term care facilities under outbreak declarations including George Derby Centre, Dania Home, New Vista Care Centre, Chartwell Carlton Garden and AgeCare Harmony Court.
