Burnaby RCMP has set crime-reduction targets for the next three years in its first new strategic plan in seven years.
The detachment aims to reduce incidents of property crime and violent crime by 3% cent by 2022.
It also plans to increase foot and bike patrols in the city by 10% and improve police response times by 5% over that same period.
In a further bid to improve public safety, Burnaby RCMP also plans to reduce motor vehicle collisions in the city by 6%.
The 2019-2022 plan, presented to the city’s public safety committee Wednesday, is the result of “community consultation, police officer experiences, research and planning by a group that encompasses a range of ranks and roles,” according to Chief Supt. Deanne Burleigh.
Burleigh launched the planning process soon after she became officer in charge of the detachment in December 2017, but the plan took longer to complete because the consultant the detachment was working with left for another job part way through, according to Burnaby RCMP.
In an introduction included in the plan, Burleigh said the document will form the basis of annual business planning, performance management and regular reporting to mayor and council to ensure transparency and accountability.
Burnaby RCMP had been without a strategic plan for seven years.
The last plan, which expired in 2012, was completed under Chief Supt. Rick Taylor, the officer in charge of Burnaby RCMP before Chief Supt. Dave Critchley, who headed the detachment between 2011 and 2016 and is now the city’s director of public safety.
