Non-profit dance group’s yearly classes will kick off on Sept. 19 for dancers aged 6 to 18.
Dance 2015 - 399
Classes will resume at Burnaby Dance studio, Dance Imagination, from Sept. 19, 2023, to June 18, 2024.

A creative dance non-profit group in Burnaby is reopening its doors this month for kids and youth eager to groove.

Dance Imagination is calling for dancers — both new and seasoned — to join their upcoming season, which runs from Sept. 19, 2023, to June 18, 2024.

The not-for-profit organization has been operating in Burnaby for over 33 years now. Last year, the studio’s artistic director, Chris LePage told the NOW that he was thrilled to bring back the kids to the studio after years of online classes.

This year’s program will tackle four different levels of modern dance for kids and youth aged 6 to 18, depending on ability and experience.

Beginners can enrol in modern 1, which focuses on the core concepts of dance: space, time, energy and technique (turns, leaps, combinations) — this is for all newcomers lacing up their dancing shoes for the first time.

It will also introduce a variety of dance styles and choreography skills.

Meanwhile, modern 2 is geared more towards dancers with more experience, and will continue to explore concepts of dance and provide a stronger focus on technique. More seasoned dancers can opt for modern 3, which will begin with 30 minutes emphasis on a specific technique before  incorporating those skills and techniques in different dance styles (modern, jazz, musical theatre, etc.).

The programs are priced at $375 to $400, payable in installments, and will include costume fees and end-of-year shirt. The classes will be held on Tuesdays at the Creative Dance Association (5135 Sperling Ave., Burnaby) and end with a special showcase in June 2024.

Registrations are now open on its website. Or you can register by emailing [email protected] or contacting 604-818-4318.

The dance studio has produced noteworthy performers over the years who have gone on to perform on different stages around the world. Studio organizers are hoping to help foster another generation of dancers as people bounce back from the pandemic years.

Unlike many dance associations that groom their young students for competitions, Creative Dance Association's primary goal is performance-oriented and stays away from "competitive" spirit.

For information on the programs, you can visit Dance Imagination's website.
