A 37-year-old man who attempted to ram a stolen pickup truck past a police stop was arrested in Abbotsford with property stolen during a Burnaby break in.

The multi-jurisdictional police incident started in Coquitlam at about 9:20 p.m. Monday, according to an Abbotsford police news release.

A member of the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service located a Toyota Tacoma pickup stolen in Burnaby on Dec. 14 travelling eastbound on Highway 1 from the Coquitlam area, the release said.

The stolen vehicle was "covertly tracked" into Abbotsford with help from plainclothes Abbotsford police officers until it entered the parking lot of a Sandman Hotel.

Police, including a dog team, moved in after the stolen truck backed into a parking stall, according to the release.

"The driver of the stolen vehicle attempted to flee by ramming police vehicles," it said. "However, officers were successful in pinning the vehicle in."

The suspect was "non-compliant," according to police, and officers deployed a police dog and "less lethal bean bag rounds" to take him into custody.

A search of the vehicle revealed a firearm and items stolen during a residential break-in in Burnaby, police said.

The 37-year-old suspect has a "significant criminal history," according to the release, and was on probation with an outstanding warrant from another province.

The man was transported to hospital with "minor injuries" but has since been released and is being held pending a bail hearing.
