A report of a man with a knife near a busy Burnaby SkyTrain station sparked a large police presence Wednesday afternoon.

At about 3:20 p.m., police were called to the area of Telford Avenue and Beresford Street near the Metrotown SkyTrain station for a report of a man with a knife, according to Burnaby RCMP.

By the time officers arrived, the man was no longer on scene, the detachment said.

With help from Metrotown security, however, police said officers were able to determine the last direction the suspect was travelling.

The man was arrested several blocks away from the initial scene at about 4 p.m. without incident, according to Burnaby RCMP.

Police said the suspect had been in an altercation with another male who was known to him, but investigators are still working out the details.

"There are no injuries to report and there is no further risk to the public," read an emailed RCMP statement. "The investigation is ongoing."

The police presence caught the attention of Metrotown residents who took to social media to find out what was happening.

"Police SUVs packed Metrotown station," stated one post on Reddit.

Other posts said police dogs were involved and described police vehicles converging at Royal Oak and Deer Lake Parkway and a man being pulled out of a car at the intersection.
