Ukrainian tribute mural in Burnaby repainted after alleged vandalism

The mural is located at a construction site on Wilson Avenue

A mural painted as a tribute to Ukraine has been repainted after it was vandalized.

The mural, painted by JJ Malcolm, is located at a construction site in the Metrotown area on Wilson Avenue and originally appeared with the Ukrainian flag, two sunflowers and the message "STAND WITH UKRAINE."

Shortly after, the mural was allegedly vandalized with red spray paint and the words "DOWN WITH THE UKRAINE'S NAZIS."

The reference relates to a claim spread by Russia that one of the reasons why it had invaded Ukraine was to stop “Nazis” in the country.

Photos now show the mural is larger in size, with numerous sunflowers and the Ukrainian flag.

The words "STOP WAR" are also painted, with the "O" being turned into the peace sign.

A police statement from Burnaby RCMP after the vandalism occurred said they were not formally contacted but sent officers to the scene.

Police were reviewing video near the scene for a possible suspect.
