COVID-19 cases have increased in Burnaby.

A week after COVID-19 cases dropped by almost 40%, the number has increased once again.

Fraser Health announced yesterday it had declared a COVID-19 outbreak at a third care facility in Burnaby.

A statement said there have been three confirmed cases at the Rideau Retirement Residence (1850 Rosser Ave.), which is owned and operated by Sienna Senior Living.

The health authority says they have worked with the site to proactively implement the following measures:

  • Staffing levels are being supported to maintain resident care
  • Social visits are restricted in the affected areas of the facility. Essential visits can continue
  • Staff and residents movement in the affected areas of the facility has been modified to minimize exposure to others
  • Cleaning and infection control measures have been further enhanced
  • Residents, families and staff are being notified
  • Twice a day screening of all staff and residents is taking place
  • Additional testing and screening is in place to support monitoring of disease control

"Fraser Health has, in partnership with long term care and assisted living facilities, implemented comprehensive strategies to prevent and respond to COVID-19 in these facilities," a notice reads.

"In addition, Fraser Health has also deployed care staff and our rapid-response teams which include clinical nurse educators, infection prevention and control experts, screeners, and patient care quality officers supporting with communication to families and assessing symptoms at sites with outbreaks. Through these teams, sites are also connected with emergency supplies and support strategies around additional personnel if needed."

Those residents who have tested positive are currently self-isolating in their homes.

COVID-19 outbreaks are also affecting Willingdon Care Centre and the Swedish Assisted Living Residence, both in Burnaby.

The Willingdon Care Centre outbreak was declared on Sept. 27, 2021. There have been 105 confirmed cases to date, with 13 lives being lost.

The outbreak at the Swedish Assisted Living Residence was declared just over one week ago on Oct. 20.
