Two-term District of North Vancouver Coun. Jim Hanson has declared he’s running to be the federal NDP candidate in the Burnaby North-Seymour riding.
The riding is currently held by Liberal MP Terry Beech, who was re-elected during the 2019 federal election.
Hanson has deep roots in both Burnaby and North Vancouver’s Seymour neighbourhood, where some of his top priorities if elected would be tackling the climate emergency, systemic racism and the issue of growing economic inequality, according to a news release.
“I believe 2021 will be the year that New Democrats win Burnaby North-Seymour. As a councillor and a lawyer, I have spoken out for people to fight for equality and against injustice. I want to represent the people of this riding in Ottawa to ensure our issues are represented,” stated Hanson, in the release.
Although no federal election has officially been called yet, potential candidates have been throwing their names into the ring in the possibility that one is announced.
Twenty-six-year-old Markiel Simpson has also announced he would be seeking the federal NDP nomination in the riding.
Federal NDP candidates have finished second in the riding in both general elections since the electoral district was officially created in 2013.
Beech was re-elected to the riding in the last federal election with just more than 1,500 votes over NDP challenger and former member of Parliament Svend Robinson.
The date of the nomination vote of NDP members has not yet been finalized, but is expected to take place in May, according to the release.
