Police responded to an incident near Alpha Secondary School Friday afternoon.

A police incident led to a lockdown at a Burnaby high school Friday afternoon.

Police responded to a report of "threats" in the area of Parker Street and Alpha Avenue, according to an emailed Burnaby RCMP statement.

Out of an "abundance of caution," police contacted Alpha Secondary School and asked school officials to activate the school's "hold and secure" protocol.

"Officers quickly located the suspect (a man in his 20s) who was taken into custody without incident near Boundary Road and Venables Street," stated the email.

There is no risk to the public, according to police.

The investigation is ongoing.

During a hold and secure, exterior classroom doors and windows are closed and students and staff are required to stay inside, according to a letter from Alpha principal Victoria Lee that went out to parents after the incident.

The protocol was in place for about 15 minutes, after which police confirmed it was safe to end it.

"Student safety is always a priority and it’s important that we keep you informed of any unusual situations that might be a concern," Lee stated the letter.
