A member of the Royal family was spotted in Burnaby last week — a mere week before King Charles’s coronation this Saturday, May 6.
The youngest brother of King Charles III, Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, was in attendance at the Odd Squad Productions Society in Burnaby last Wednesday, April 26.
The duke visited the charity as Odd Squad recently became an award centre for the Duke of Edinburgh Award, which recognizes and empowers young people to learn and grow through non-formal education.
Odd Squad Productions, which has been delivering prevention programs for youth in the Lower Mainland and across Canada for decades now, hosted Prince Edward and other dignitaries for an afternoon of judo demonstrations and wood chopping and carving activities.
The Duke of Ed program’s Twitter account tweeted, “spending time with this amazing group of young people, HRH learned how they are using the Award to elevate themselves and the types of activities they are working towards completing. It was an exciting day seeing the Award in action.”

Prince Edward, along with the other dignitaries in presence — British Columbia Lt.-Gov. Janet Austin and the Commissioner of Yukon, the Honorable Angélique Bernard — were all presented with commemorative hand-crafted, inscribed charcuterie boards created by the youth in the program.
Also in attendance were Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley, president of the Burnaby Firefighters Local 323, members of the Odd Squad staff and board of directors, and Vancouver deputy police Chief Howard Chow, among others.
