A fourth Burnaby long-term care centre is now under a second COVID-19 declaration, its second in less than one month.
In a statement released today (Jan. 5), Fraser Health said six confirmed cases have been detected at the facility involving four residents and two staff.
"Fraser Health has worked with the sites to support the implementation of enhanced control measures," the authority said.
"Fraser Health is also working with the sites to identify anyone who may have been exposed, and is taking steps to protect the health of all staff, residents and families."
It also said they have proactively implemented the following measures:
- Staffing levels are being supported to maintain resident care
- Social visits are restricted in the affected areas of the facility. Essential visits can continue
- Staff and residents movement in the affected areas of the facility has been modified to minimize exposure to others
- Cleaning and infection control measures have been further enhanced
- Residents, families and staff are being notified
- Twice a day screening of all staff and residents is taking place
- Additional testing and screening is in place to support monitoring of disease control
George Derby Centre was subject to an outbreak on Nov. 8, 2021, when there were 10 confirmed cases.
The outbreak included 24 cases involving 16 residents and eight staff members. One death was also recorded.
In November of 2020, the centre endured a tragic outbreak with 36 lives lost among 109 confirmed infections.
Two other Burnaby outbreaks were recently declared on New Year's Eve at New Vista Care Centre and Chartwell Carlton Gardens.
New Vista Care Centre's initial outbreak announcement involved three staff members and one resident while Chartwell Carlton Gardens involved three staff members.
Two days earlier, on Dec. 29, 2021, an outbreak was also declared at Burnaby's AgeCare Harmony Court after two confirmed cases were discovered involving one resident and one staff member.
The facility also went through a fatal outbreak that began on Nov. 19, 2020, and saw 116 cases involving 73 residents and 43 staff members.
Of the 73 residents that were infected, 30 passed away.
