South Burnaby road closed after pedestrian seriously injured

Saturday incident follows death of another pedestrian earlier this week
10th Ave ped 4s
Tenth Avenue has been closed to traffic after a crash on Saturday.

Burnaby RCMP are on scene at a collision involving a pedestrian that has closed an entire street for an investigation.

Burnaby RCMP incorrectly tweeted that 10th Street was closed, but it's actually 10th Avenue between 2nd Avenue and 5th Avenue on Saturday afternoon.

A pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital. The pedestrian was struck by a Jeep and was not in a marked crosswalk.

The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with police. The victim is in critical condition.

December has been a deadly month for pedestrians, with six different people being hit. Most recently, an 81-year-old pedestrian hit by a car in Burnaby died of her injuries, according to police.

The woman, a Burnaby resident, was taken to hospital in critical condition after being hit Dec. 11 at about 1 p.m. at the intersection of Imperial Street and Sussex Avenue, according to a Burnaby RCMP news release.

RCMP tips for pedestrians and drivers:

Pedestrians:

  • Wear bright clothing with reflective material that can be seen by drivers
  • Always maintain eye contact with the driver approaching you
  • Don’t assume you have the right of way and walk in the crosswalk; make sure it is safe
  • Don’t wear head phones or wear your hoodie up so it affects your senses
  • Use established crosswalks at lighted intersections when you can

Drivers:

  • Be ready to yield to pedestrians attempting to cross the roadway
  • Be focused on driving and put down your cell phone
  • Always check twice when making turns and make eye contact with pedestrians before moving forward
  • Be proactive in anticipating what other drivers and pedestrians are going to do
  • Give yourself extra time to and assume it is going to be slippery
