You can now take a self-guided tour of local farmers markets in Burnaby thanks to a free "tasting passport" app by the BC Association of Farmers Markets.
The tasting passport is a fun way to discover local flavours and exciting experiences and earn points that can be redeemed for prizes, according to a press release.
Tourism Burnaby and Destination BC helped curate of the Burnaby-specific itinerary.
The featured markets on the tour include:
- Brentwood Artisan Farmers Market
- Burnaby City Hall Farmers Market
- Nikkei Garden Farmers Market
All the markets incorporate fresh produce, entertainment and interesting local vendors.
The passport also showcases fun things to do and places to eat around town including Hart House Restaurant, Mintara atop Burnaby Mountain, Burnaby Village Museum and Carousel and Deer Lake Boat Rentals.
The passport features markets all around province as well.
Heather O’Hara, executive director of BCAFM, said the app lets friends embark on a "culinary quest" where they can earn rewards and challenge fellow foodies.
"Food brings people together and our new tasting passport app aims to unite fellow foodies through vibrant ‘taste and do’ experiences," she said.
"Enjoying local food and drink enriches the experience that travellers have when visiting B.C.," added Alison McKay, vice-president of destination management at Destination BC.
"Having awe-inspiring local food and drink content to power up this innovative passport app from the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets is a great way to expand the opportunities for residents and visitors to explore and engage with the diverse food offerings in B.C."
B.C. farmers markets contributed $233 million to the local economy, according to a recent economic impact study.
Almost one million tourists visit B.C. farmers markets every year.
