Lougheed Shopping Centre will be the future home of Burnaby's (temporary) Cameron Library and Community Centre.

We now know when Temporary Cameron Community Centre and Library will open its doors.

In a release, Burnaby city staff have set April 29 as the date when local residents will first be able to utilize the Cameron branch's services and social spaces.

It'll be located inside the Lougheed mall (9855 Austin Ave.) — set in the old H&M space on the lower level — and will stay there for the next three years while the new Cameron Community Centre and Library undergoes design and, eventually, construction.

The current library at 9523 Cameron St. will remain open until March 29.

Between then and April 28, the public will still be able to access the Burnaby Public Library's three other locations:

The city says setting the date for temporary library marks "an important step" towards building the new Cameron Community Centre and Library, which has a tenative completion year of 2026.

The Cameron Recreation Complex and Library "no longer meets the evolving demands and expectations of the expanding area," the city's release reads.

It's $252-million replacement is set to include a new library, pool, gym with two full-sized basketball courts, weight room with cardio facilities, an indoor running track, fitness studios, dedicated youth and seniors’ spaces, child-minding and play areas and a civic plaza.

Meanwhile, the temporary Cameron branch will include a variety of programming activities carried over from its main location, including:

  • library services
  • seniors’ movement and social spaces
  • dance and music programs for all ages
  • health-focused programs
  • artist and theatre groups
  • arts, crafts, cards and games
  • book and garden clubs
