Deadline looms to nominate an outstanding B.C. senior for these awards

The Seniors of Distinction Awards are ​​the only awards recognizing seniors in B.C.'s Lower Mainland.

A Canadian continuing care organization is looking to recognize local seniors that have made a positive impact in their community.

The deadline is Sunday, Sept. 1, for residents across B.C.'s Lower Mainland to nominate an outstanding citizen aged 55 years and older for AgeCare's annual Seniors of Distinction Awards.

The accolades are given to those that have demonstrated wisdom, kindness and generosity fthis past year.

The awards will be handed out on National Seniors Day — a cross-country celebration of older adults' contributions to society — on Oct. 1

AgeCare, which has two locations in Burnaby and 14 across B.C., believes it's important to honour even the most humble of seniors that wish to make their community, neighbourhoods and workplaces better for all.

The ultimate goal is to provide a platform that expresses appreciation and admiration.

According to AgeCare, seniors living in communities between Squamish and Hope are eligible to be nominated.

Accomplishments in any of the following four categories must have been completed after the person turned 55 years old:

Arts 

  • This award celebrates a senior who has demonstrated artistic achievement and/or made notable contributions in support of the arts
    • All artistic expressions, forms and disciplines are eligible: literary, performing, visual, culinary, craft, environmental, new media and music

Healthy living 

  • This award recognizes a senior who leads by example and promotes a healthy and active programming for all ages
    • This can be reflected in multiple ways: a passion for sports, a gregarious green thumb or instilling their knowledge to inspire younger generations.

Leadership 

  • This award commemorates a senior who serves as a role model, inspiring others to pursue their goals and ambitions by providing supportive guidance and celebrating their accomplishments
    • This person's passion lies in fostering potential and raising people up by encouraging them to achieve their fullest potential

Community Service 

  • This award celebrates an influential senior who has been instrumental in bettering their community and/or the lives of seniors through initiatives
    • This can include new or different programs, as well as fundraisers or services
