Traffic 'disruptions' begin in Burnaby as gas line project starts

Construction begins at several spots through North Burnaby.

As the weather begins to warm, Burnaby’s popular parks, lakes and recreation areas get busier.

This spring and summer, if you’re planning a trip to Burnaby Lake, Robert Burnaby Park or one of the nearby recreation facilities, FortisBC is letting people know construction is taking place in the area.

FortisBC is adding a new gas line through parts of Burnaby.
“To give crews the space they need to work safely and as quickly as possible, there will be parking and traffic disruptions along Sperling Avenue and Glencarin Drive near Burnaby Lake, and 4th Street near Robert Burnaby Park,” reads a statement. “So whether you’re playing on the local fields, heading out on the water or taking your dog for a walk – it’s important to “know before you go” and give yourself a little extra time to get where you’re going.”

Here’s the latest update on our Pattullo Gas Line Replacement work in Burnaby:

  • Sperling Avenue and Glencarin Drive: Sperling Avenue is closed adjacent to the Bill Copeland Sports Centre, and access south of Sprott Street is single-lane alternating traffic.
  • Burnaby Lake Parking Lot: This lot is accessible from the north entrance only and reduced parking is available.
  • Freeway Trail: The western side of the Freeway Trail and the parking lot at the end of Glencarin Drive are closed.
  • 4th Street: Currently there is a full road closure of 4th Street near Robert Burnaby Park baseball field, from the BC Hydro trail to just southeast of Elwell Street. Around mid-March, as work progresses, the road closure will move to the southeast side of the baseball field.
  • Robert Burnaby Park parking lot: This lot is currently accessible from the south entrance only and reduced parking is available. Around mid-March, as work progresses, the road closure will move to the southeast side of the baseball field and the parking lot will be accessible from the north entrance only.

“In the interests of safety, we would like to remind people not to enter worksites or cross construction fences even if our crews are not working at the time. Stay in the loop with our interactive traffic map, which always has the latest information on traffic disruptions and schedules for work in your neighbourhood.”
