A bounty of Burnaby to B.C. swim champs

Barracuda and Mountain Manta clubs qualify with nearly 120 individual medals for summer swimming provincials in Victoria

Burnaby Barracudas club swimmer Markus Wong finished in second place in Division 4 boys’ 100-metre breaststroke at the Simon Fraser regional swim meet at Spani Pool in Coquitlam on Sunday.

The Burnaby Barracudas and Burnaby Mountain Mantas will be well represented at the B.C. summer swimming championships in Victoria next week.

The Burnaby clubs garnered nearly 120 individual medals between them, while three relay teams also set new regional meet records at the Simon Fraser qualifying meet at Spani Pool in Coquitlam last weekend.

Multi-medalists Ashley Ko and Amy Kang led the Division I Barracuda girls’ team, including Natalia Blazevic and Amy Zhu, to a new regional 200-metre medley record of 2:55.72 at the two-day meet.

Ko won four individual gold medals in the 50 and 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 100m individual medley.

Kang also medaled four times, winning the 50m backstroke, placing second in the 100m free and IM and third in the 50m breaststroke.

Zhu was runner-up in the 50m back and third in both freestyle events.

Blazevic won a silver medal in the 50m breaststroke.

Garrett Yeo was another Barracuda club quadruple gold-medal winner, placing first in the Div. 5 boys’ 100m back, fly and breast, 200m IM.

Bryan Yu and Peter Huang also won four individual gold for the Mantas.

Yu, a Div. 6 swimmer, was first in the 100m fly, back and breast, as well as the IM.

Huang placed first in the Div. 2 boys’ 50 and 100m free, 50m fly and back.

Manta teams set the other two Simon Fraser region records.

Hannah Cui helped the Div. 5 girls, including Elva Yu, Lauren Sartori and Taila Briggs, to a regional meet record time of 1:58.86 in the 200m free relay.

Cui also won four individual Div. 4 medals, including gold in free and back. She also earned a silver in the fly.

Yu, another Div. 4 swimmer, was second in both freestyle races, while Sartori came second in Div. 5 50m fly and third in both 100m breast and 200m IM.

Div. 3 boys – Armaan Basi, Jadon Tsang, Samuel Kim and Kevin Wei – set a new medley relay record of 2:27.08.

Individually, Kim won the 50m fly, while Basi was also second in the 50m back and third in the 100m free. Tsang was runner-up in the 50m breast and third in the 50m free.

Paul Orogo was another four-medal winner for the ’Cudas. The Div. 1 boy won the free, fly and IM, while placing runner-up in the 100m free.

Barracuda’s Emi Wong and Randy Ho were also four-time medal winners.

Wong won two gold in Div. 6 girls’ breast and IM and bronze in the 50 and 100m fly.

Ho won two Div. 7 races at 100m back and IM, while also earning a silver in the 100m free and a bronze in the free sprint.

Manta’s Sayla Briggs won the Div. 5 girls’ free sprint and 100m breast. She was second in the 100m free and IM.

Christopher Ng also came away with four Div. 2 medals, earning silver in the free and IM and bronze in breast and 100m free.

Other Barracuda multi-medal winners included: Div. 2 Ronan Livesey, including gold in the IM; Bree Livesey in Div. 4; Brady Liu and Ricky Dang in Div. 7; Fernando Lu in Div. 1, including gold in the 50m fly; Anastasia Cimiliuc in Div. 2 and Nicholas Tran in Div. 5, including gold in 100m free.

Single gold medals went to Kurtis Li in Div. 5 free, Cayden Liang in Div. 3 breast and Leo Shen in Div. 7 breast.

Daniela Luongo, Jakub Vincalek, Edward Wong, Markus Wong, Alexa Tran, Allison Jung, Nicole Ticea, Olivia Graham, Deanna Dang, Lucas Fong and Giancarlo Marquez also medaled for the Barracudas.

Multi-medaling Mantas included: Div. 2 Sunaina Bains, including gold in the girls’ 100m IM; Alex Shen in Div. 4; Elton Lai in Div. 5; Shalynn Lee in Div. 6 girls, including gold in 100m fly; and Aaron Cheong and Brian Cheung in Div. 7.

Single gold medallists for the Mantas were Sean Li in Div. 4 100m back, Louisa Tsang in Div. 7 100m back and Derek Shi in Div. 4 100m breast.

Sophia Ng, Brooklyn Sartori, Sean Leong, Desiree Wu, Michelle Li, Daniel Kim, Emma Hwang and Bonnie Cheung.

Both Burnaby clubs also qualified numerous divisional relay teams at the regional meet.

The B.C. summer swimming championships will be held at the Saanich Commonwealth Place pool in Victoria from Aug. 21 to 23.
