Burnaby athletes shine big time away from home

Mariya Chekanovych of Burnaby, swimming for Simon Fraser Aquatic Club, won a pair of races in breaststroke at the Canada Cup in Toronto last weekend.

Chekanovych won both the 50m and 100m breast, setting a new meet record at the shorter distance over the three-day event.

Chekanovych raced to victory in the 50m in a time of 32.22, breaking Olympian Annamay Pierse's 2007 meet record of 32.39.

The 17-year-old SFA swimmer just missed setting a second meet record in the 100m breast, edging Okanagan's Kierra Smith for first place in a photo finish. Chekanovych's time of 1: 09.72 was just shy of Pierse's record time of 1: 09.03 also set in 2007.

Chekanovych brought home a third medal from the competition, finishing with a bronze in the 200m breast just behind Smith's silver-medal swim.

Hyack Swim Club's Sherry Liu had a couple of strong showings at the Canada Cup swim championships.

The Burnaby swimmer placed eighth in the women's 800-metre freestyle A final, clocking a time of 9: 03.06 in the elite field.

The 17-year-old Burnaby swimmer also won the B final in the 400m free in a top-eight time of 4: 18.58.

Liu finished off the Canada Cup meet with a 22nd overall best in the 200m free. Liu's preliminary time of 2: 04.07 would have placed her sixth best overall in the A final.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Burnaby Central grad Jason Boroevich was named the University of the Fraser Valley's male athlete of the week.

The Cascades middle blocker recorded 25 points in Fraser Valley's weekend sweep over Camosun in PacWest men's volleyball last week.

The Burnaby freshman had seven kills, three blocks and two aces in a 3-2 win over the Victoriaarea college. Boroevich then scored nine kills and four blocks in a 3-1 win in the rematch.

ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM

Alpha Secondary grad Megan Ellis was one of four Portland State University Vikings volleyball players to earn All-Big Sky Conference honours.

Ellis, a junior, and sophomore teammate Garyn Schlatter were both named to the conference first all-star team. The Vikings Aubrey Mitchell and Katie O'Brien were given honorable mentions.

Ellis finished second in the league in kills per set and was fourth in points per set. She led the Vikings in kills in 22 of 29 matches and was the only Portland State player to score more than 20 kills in a match, a feat she accomplished on three separate occasions.

Ellis also recorded a team-high 13 double-doubles this season, fourth best in the conference.

FIRST-EVER GOAL

Burnaby field hockey player Gabriel Ho-Garcia scored his first goal for the senior national team in Canada's 3-2 loss to Argentina at the recent International Field Hockey Federation's Champions Challenge in South Africa.

The 18-year-old Burnaby Lake club product scored on a diving deflection in the 20th minute of the match to open the scoring in just his second international start with the national team.

Canada finished in eighth place following the competition. The team's only win was a 3-1 victory over Malaysia in pool play.
