Burnaby athletes strike gold to kick off Western Canada Summer Games

Rohan Stewart won Burnaby's first gold medal for B.C. in track at the Western Canada Summer Games in Kamloops. Stewart placed first in the men's 100-metre dash in a new record time of 10.56, beating B.C. teammate Andrew Nathan by a tenth of a second.

The top three medal winners all beat the previous record of 10.71 set by Sam Effah of Alberta in 2007.

On Monday, Burnaby kayaker Rebecca Alley took gold in the open women's 1,000m K1 final at Shumway Lake. Alley posted a winning time of 4:44.5, more than six seconds faster than runner-up Olivia Dyck of Saskatchewan.
