Burnaby-based Giants miffed at Mac's

The Northwest Giants were all but blanked at the Mac's AAA midget hockey tournament in Calgary. The Giants picked up a single point at the prestigious international competition, earning a 3-3 draw with the Sherwood Park J. Ennis Kings on Dec. 29.

The Burnaby-based Giants lost its other round-robin matchups to Edmonton SSAC, Beardy's Blackhawks and eventual runner-up UFA Bisons.

The Bisons lost in the tournament final to visiting Russia Severstal/Locomotiv 5-0.

Burnaby defenceman Joseph Carvalho had a strong tourney despite the team's collective woes, garnering five points in four games.

The second-year blue-liner was the Giants' team star in the first two games, scoring a goal and adding an assist in a 6-2 loss to the Bisons and a 7-5 defeat to the Blackhawks.

Carvalho also drew an assist in the Giants' 3-1 losss to Edmonton.

The Giants are back in action this week with three games this weekend, including a makeup game against the South Island Thunderbirds at Burnaby Winter Club on Friday, Jan. 6 at 9 p.m.

On Saturday, first-place is up for grabs when the Giants host the Northeast Chiefs at the winter club at 7:45 p.m. The two teams complete the weekend series on Sunday at Planet Ice in Coquitlam at noon.
