The Grandview Steelers are finding it hard to escape the basement in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League.

The Burnaby Winter Club-based club split two games last week, starting with a 5-4 victory over the Port Moody Black Panthers on Dec. 3 and ending with a 6-2 loss to Tom Shaw conference No. 2 team Delta Ice Hawks on Sunday.

The two points left the Steelers deadlocked in last place in the Tom Shaw conference with the North Vancouver Wolf Pack, both with 21 points.

Karl Schopf was the Steelers' first star in the win over the Panthers with a goal and two assists.

Matt Martin tallied the unassisted, short-handed game-winner late in the final period.

Joel Gaudet also had a pair of back-to-back markers between the first and second stanzas.

William McGladrey recorded the win, stopping 37 shots in the Grandview goal.

At home, Nick Taylor, picked up in a Dec. 1 trade with Port Moody for Mico Dragutinovic, had a less than stellar start against the Ice Hawks, making just 24 saves in his first game with the Steelers.

Joey Santucci and Vik Sanghera got the goals for Grandview.

The Steelers are in North Vancouver on Saturday, before returning home to the winter club against North Delta on Sunday, beginning at 4 p.m.
