Hyack Swim Club product Stefan Milosevic and the University of British Columbia’s men’s 800-metre freestyle relay team – including Jonathan Brown, Justin Chan and Coleman Allen – capped off Day 2 of the Canadian Interuniversity Sports swim championships with a record-breaking performance.
The Thunderbird team bettered their program’s 2003 record, shaving more than one second off the previous mark with a winning time of 7:09.50.
Allen, the Canada West swimmer of the year, led UBC’s men with two individual gold medals in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, bettering his own CIS record in the fly with a time of 51.88 seconds.
Allen also joined teammates Luke Peddie, Sergey Holson and freshman Milosevic, a Cariboo Hill Secondary School grad, to win UBC’s fourth-straight gold medal in the 400 freestyle relay.
The last race of the night summed up the men’s standings perfectly as UBC, Toronto and Calgary exchanged the lead numerous times, but the Thunderbirds came out on top by three-tenths of a second over the Dinos.
Milosevic also placed ninth, winning the B final of the men’s 200m freestyle in a time of 1:48.33.
The UBC women won a third straight CIS aggregate title far outdistancing runner-up University of Montreal for top spot.
The Thunderbird men’s team placed second behind CIS champion University of Toronto by less than 90 points.
