Burnaby defender Adriano Clemente was named to the under-15 boys' all-tournament team at the Super-Y League North American soccer finals in Tampa Bay, Florida on Dec. 23. Clemente was selected based on his strong defensive play for the Canadian Mountain United FC's u-15 team in the B.C. High Performance League.
The 2011 North American finals u-15 boys' team was announced last week with the champion Princeton Soccer Association seeing a pair of players named to the team. After conceding the fewest goals in the tournament, just two in five games, Princeton's Julian Antal, who finished the tournament with three goals and one assist, and Gavin Coutts were both selected to the side.
The all-tournament team was selected by United Soccer League staff based on tournament statistics, nominations submitted by tournament coaches, and recommendations from the USL technical staff. The 2011 Super Y-League North American Finals were held Dec. 2 to 6 in Brandon and Land O' Lakes, Florida.
Coquitlam Metro-Ford's Mitchell Popadynetz earned the tournament's Golden Boot, scoring five goals for the runner-up squad. He was joined by three teammates, including goalkeeper Alex Skyrzeta, defender Alejandro Varela and forward Domenic Brazinha. Brazinha finished with a goal and three assists.
One player apiece were selected from the other two semifinalists, with MPS Knights midfielder Scott Brazina being named after recording two goals and two assists and Perugia Grifos midfielder Connor Phillips earning his berth after recording a goal and assist while impressing the watching coaches.
Other selections included Jordan Clark of the Northern Virginia Royals, who conceded just two goals in the tournament. Also honored were the TSF Academy forward duo of Samuel Duany, who caught the eye of a number of coaches, and Luis Mendoza, who finished the tournament with four goals and two assists.
