The Simon Fraser University women's basketball team could not overcome a slow start against the Western Washington Vikings on Saturday, losing 76-55 to close out 2011.

Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe led all scorers with 24 points and eight rebounds.

Chelsea Reist was the only other SFU player to reach double digits as she scored 10 points. Britt Harris led Western Washington with 22 points and eight rebounds.

"We didn't compete this afternoon, especially in the first half," said SFU head coach Bruce Langford. "Our transition was poor and we didn't shoot well, which makes it tough to be successful. I thought we developed some flow in the second half against their bench and then continued to play well when their starters came back in, but by then it was too little too late."

The first half was not kind to the Clan as SFU shot just 36% including 0-8 from beyond the three-point line.

Despite their shooting woes, the Clan kept the score close for most of the first half.

However, with seven minutes left to play, Western Washington went on a run that resulted in a 15-point, 40-25 lead at halftime.

While the Clan improved on both sides of the ball in the second half, it was not enough to overcome the Vikings.

The loss drops SFU's record to 7-4 on the season and 2-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

SFU will be on the road next week as they travel to Western Oregon to face the Wolves on Thursday before taking on the Saint Martin's Saints on Saturday in Lacey, Washington.
