Senior Jaya Rampuri was in fine mid-season form to post her first collegiate tournament win for Simon Fraser University this week, topping the inaugural True North Classic at the Richmond Country Club.
The tournament, hosted by SFU, was the first-ever NCAA golf tournament held in Canada.
Rampuri shot par 72 on the second and final round to capture the title by three strokes over first-round leader Cammie Decker of Concordia. Decker led after Day 1 as the only player under par, at -1 on the 5,978-yard layout.
It was consistency which helped lift the Coquitlam native past her rival. Rampuri shot two rounds of 72 to take the 36-hole tournament with a 144 after Decker recorded a final round 4-over-par 76 during the wet and windy conditions on Day 2. Decker finished at 147.
SFU’s Estee Leung shot rounds of 72 and 76 on her hometown course to finish third with a 4-over-par 148. SFU’s Emily Leung was tied for fourth after shooting a pair of 75s to finish at 150. Claire Lovan was eighth after rounds of 76 and 77 for a 9-over-par 153.
Simon Fraser increased its first round, nine-stroke lead to win the team title by 25 strokes over Western Washington. SFU placed four golfers in the Top 8.
The team combined for rounds of 295 and 300 for a 595 total to defeat WWU (620) and third-place Academy of Art (624).
Universities who competed in the inaugural True North Classic were Holy Names (California), Academy of Art, (California), Hawaii Hilo, Colorado Christian, Northwest Nazarene (Idaho), Montana State Billings, Concordia (Oregon), Western Washington, UBC Okanagan and University of Fraser Valley.
