Simon Fraser University hockey turns 10 this season with a whole fall semester of special events planned.

Simon Fraser University hockey will celebrate its 10th anniversary this season.

Throughout the year there will be a number of special events celebrating 10 years of SFU club hockey, including; top-10 SFU players countdown, top-10 SFU moments countdown, alumni night, and other player appearances and ceremonies. There is also a special 10th anniversary logo, which will be featured throughout the season.

The 2015/16 regular season kicks off with a meeting between SFU and local rival Trinity Western University on Saturday, Oct. 10 in Langley. It will be a rematch of the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League semi-final series in which SFU swept the top team in the regular season. Both teams will want to get off to a good start to the season, and show their rivals what to expect.

The Clan’s home opener will be the following Saturday, Oct. 17, when Eastern Washington pays a visit to Burnaby. The Eagles missed the BCIHL playoffs last season and will be looking to make a statement early in the season. Last year, the Clan saw over 1,300 fans attend the home opener, in what was the largest crowd of the season.

Fans will have to wait until the final home game of the fall semester to see a rematch of the 2015 BCIHL championship, when Selkirk College visits Burnaby on Dec. 5. It will also be the the teddy bear toss night. SFU staff are currently working with local groups to find other items to be tossed.  Stay tuned to find out what will be raining onto the ice that night when SFU scores its first goal.

SFU will play five of their 12 home games during the fall semester and will have all regular season games, home and away, available on pay per view at www.fasthockey.com.

This will be the second season of the Clan’s partnership with the Highland Pub on the Burnaby campus, and all weekday games will be shown live on TV. During the fall semester, the only two weekday away games are Friday, Oct. 30 against Eastern Washington, and Friday, Nov. 20 versus the University of Victoria.

This season will feature all five BCIHL teams playing each opponent six times (three at home and three away), to complete the 24-game season. The BCIHL Showcase will be hosted by SFU at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre, January 15 to 17 and will feature all five BCIHL teams playing games in Burnaby that weekend, along with numerous other events celebrating 10 years of the BCIHL.
