Burnaby's Mariya Chekanovych will be joining team Canada at the third annual FINA world junior swim championships in Lima, Peru.
Chekanovych, 16, who swims for Simon Fraser Aquatics, will be competing in the women's 100and 200-metre breaststroke for Canada this week.
The Grade 11 Burnaby Central Secondary student earned her spot on the junior squad following a fifth-place finish in the 200metre long course breast at the 2011 Canadian world swim trials at Saanich Commonwealth Place pool on March 30.
Chekanovych, the youngest swimmer in the A final at the nationals, finished in a time of 2: 29.43, five seconds behind Olympians Annamay Pierse and Martha McCabe, who placed first and second, respectively.
