Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the classic film or just looking for a fun night out, Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5: The Musical is set to bring laughs, empowerment, and unforgettable tunes to New Westminster this spring. Presented by Royal City Musical Theatre, the production will run from April 25 to May 11 at The Massey Theatre.
Inspired by the 1980 cult classic starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, this toe-tapping musical is a hilarious and uplifting tale of friendship, revenge, and female empowerment in the corporate world. Featuring original music and lyrics by Dolly Parton herself, the show follows three overworked and underappreciated office workers—sharp-witted Violet, timid Judy and feisty Doralee—who decide to take control of their futures in ways they never imagined.

“The original film is fantastic—it’s filled with humor, heart, and friendship,” says Chris Adams, Interim Artistic Director of Royal City Musical Theatre and co-director of Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5: The Musical. “Watching the movie, there are so many moments that feel like they should burst into song—well, now they do!”
While the musical brings a fresh and dynamic stage experience, the story’s themes remain just as relevant today as they were in 1980. In fact, the original film was inspired by real-life workplace discrimination, with Jane Fonda developing the idea after meeting with women’s labor activists.
Bringing Broadway-caliber talent to New Westminster
Audiences can expect the addition of world-class choreography, a live orchestra, with all the signature humor and heart that made the film a classic, reimagined by Irene Karas Loeper, Madeleine Suddaby, and Maia Beresford in the show’s starring roles. “Audiences can expect a big, Broadway-style musical—something Royal City Musical Theatre is known for,” explains Adams.
Presented by Royal City Musical Theatre (RCMT), the production is part of the company’s long-standing tradition of bringing Broadway-caliber performances to the Lower Mainland. Since its founding in 1989, RCMT has built a reputation for excellence, welcoming more than 10,000 audience members annually.
Over the years, RCMT has staged numerous acclaimed productions, including classics like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Singin' in the Rain, and Annie. The company provides a platform for both seasoned professionals and aspiring performers to collaborate in a professional atmosphere, fostering growth and excellence in musical theatre.
With a cast of almost 30, an incredible orchestra performing the original Broadway orchestrations, and standout lighting and set design, Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5: The Musical may be RCMT’s biggest year yet.

The production will take place at The Massey Theatre, one of British Columbia’s most cherished performance venues. Opened in 1949 as the province’s largest theatre, Massey has hosted everything from orchestras and ballets to music legends like Jann Arden.
