A pair of local basketball players will take to the high school hardwood one more time as part of the Girls High School All-Star event tonight (Thursday) in Port Coquitlam.
Burnaby Mountain Lions' Sophia Vivero will be among the sharpshooters competing in the Grade 11 and under Futures Classic at 6 p.m., where the all-stars of the non-graduating team face off in a Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley game. Vivero, a guard, will be in Lower Mainland colours, looking to contribute in the same way she led the Lions at the Crehan Cup in February.
In that B.C. qualifying tournament, Vivero finished in the top-10 among shooters, averaging 19.3 points per game with 58 points scored. In the three games, she counted six treys. Burnaby Mountain fell short of qualifying for the provincials.
In the main event, the graduating seniors of the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley teams will face off at 8 p.m., with Burnaby Central's Jaylynne Huynh providing some strong local content. Huynh was a dynamic force with the Wildcats, counting the fifth-best scoring totals at the Crehan Cup despite just a pair of games. She averaged 22 points and peeled off 13 three-pointers.
Also selected for the Lower Mainland team, but unable to attend due to school commitments, were St. Thomas More's Brooklyn Monks and Emma Stewart-Barnett.
