The City of Burnaby Eco-Centre has earned a triumphant win from the B.C Used Oil Management Association (BCUOMA).
The BCUOMA is a not-for-profit group dedicated to the collection and recycling of used lubricating oil, oil filters, oil containers, used antifreeze and antifreeze containers in British Columbia, announced the winners of their third annual Top Collector Awards.
It named the Burnaby Eco-Centre as the top oil collection site in B.C. The Ridge Meadows Recycling Society (Maple Ridge) was in second place, and Hartland Landfill (Victoria) earned bronze.
Over 30 B.C. public recycling centres have been honored for their exemplary performance and commitment to the collection of used oil and antifreeze materials across the province throughout 2021.
“Our top collectors went above and beyond by upgrading their infrastructures to make collection more environmentally friendly, educating their customers about used oil recycling, installing new informational signage, and promoting used oil and antifreeze recycling in their communities,” said David Lowes, CEO of the BCUOMA.
Used oil is a valuable resource and if it is recycled at one of BCUOMA’s dedicated public recycling centres it can be recovered and reused. It can be re-refined into new lubricating oil or material inputs for manufacturing or energy products.
Additionally, used oil filters contain metal, which is recycled into metal products like rebar, nails, and wire. Used oil and antifreeze containers are recycled and used to manufacture new oil containers, drainage tiles, and parking curbs.
In an interview with the NOW, Lowes said that “the containers are switched out twice a week, and it depends on the season. Many people come to recycle oil during the spring; while they are doing a ‘spring clean’ in their garage.”
