In Nick's memory ...

The fundraising event will be on Friday, May 10, at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown in Burnaby. Tickets are $75 each, or two for $140. They include tapas, a drink and $1,000 worth of gambling credits. There will also be live music from John Gilliat. Call Natalie at 604-8502408 for tickets. Proceeds go to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Trimmings for charity

Local vets are putting their skills to good use in support of the Ride to Conquer Cancer. Veterinarians June Milliken and Brad Gilbert, from the Care Pet Wellness Group, will be joining the ride, a two-day cycling event that raises money for the B.C. Cancer Foundation. The vets are offering free toenail trims for pets to anyone who donates $10 or more to the cause. The Burnaby clinic is at 7877 Kingsway, and the offer is on until June 1. Donations greater than $20 receive a tax receipt.

Grateful for Kiwanis

The Burnaby-based Down Syndrome Research Foundation is thanking the Kiwanis Club of Vancouver for a $3,000 grant.

The money will go towards the foundation's summer school session, a six-week program for teens and adults with special needs. The grant will specifically help pay for any necessary supplies. The Down Syndrome Research Foundation runs a variety of programs for people with intellectual disabilities and supports research on Down syndrome. The Burnaby facility also has a MEG brain scanner. For more information, go to www. dsrf.org. The Kiwanis Club is a group of volunteers dedicated to helping youth, children and teens.

Happy birthday!

SFU's UniverCity child-care centre celebrated its one-year anniversary on April 10. The celebration included an unveiling of a new piece by local artist Brent Comber. The child-care centre is part of the UniverCity, a development complex on Burnaby Mountain, close to Simon Fraser University. The child-care centre promotes sustainability and care for the environment and the children who attend also learn about nature.
