For gardeners, there's no such thing as 'too early' to be planning ahead.
A local organization is hoping to help people get a little boost of enthusiasm and education right in time for the growing season.
The Land Conservancy of B.C. is hosting a series of educational workshops this spring at the Eagles Estate Heritage Garden on Sperling Avenue in Burnaby.
The first workshop, set for March 31 from 10 to 11:30 a.m., is focused on organic vegetable gardening.
Expert Arzeena Hamir will be guiding participants through the class, talking about the process of planning and growing a vegetable garden.
Hamir is an agrologist and coordinator with the Richmond Food Security Society, a board member with the Richmond Sharing Farm, the Richmond Schoolyard Society and the B.C. Food Systems Network, and teaches gardening classes around Metro Vancouver.
She specializes in organic vegetable production, and is a contributor on CBC's B.C. Almanac.
The cost of the course is $20 or $15 for members. Pre-registration is required, by contacting the Conservancy's head gardener Lynsey Dobbie at 604-733-2313 or [email protected].
Eagles Estate Heritage Garden is at 5655 Sperling Avenue, near Deer Lake, and covers 1.6 acres. It was built and maintained by early Buranby residents Drs. Blythe and Violet Eagles. The conservancy works in partnership with the City of Burnaby to restore the heritage garden with the help of volunteers. Visitors are welcome in the garden all year, and interpretive centre is open from May to September, Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 p.m.
