Burnaby community centres and parks are open despite the snow.

The snow has made a mess of roads and transit, but Burnaby's community centres are weathering the storm.

Community centres across the city, including pools and fitness centres, remain open despite the wintry conditions.

All Burnaby libraries are also open, with regular hours, though a winter storytime event at the Cameron branch was cancelled due to the weather.

Meanwhile, certain civic arts facilities have shut for the day.

Burnaby Art Gallery, Burnaby Village Museum and Shadbolt Centre for the Arts are closed Dec. 20.

This means the Heritage Christmas event at Burnaby Village Museum will be closed in the evening. You can check for updates on the museum's website.

Burnaby Lake Regional Park is open and the Piper Spit and the Avalon parking lots have been plowed. Metro Vancouver regional parks division manager Paul Brar told the NOW by email park trails are snowy and could be slippery. He advised park-goers to be winter-ready: wear appropriate footwear, obey all posted notices, and stay off ponds and water bodies as the ice can be thin and dangerous.

Garbage collection was cancelled on Tuesday, with Zones 2A and 2B re-scheduled to Dec. 28.

Canada Post suspended mail delivery on Tuesday to Metro Vancouver, including Burnaby, due to the snow. For updates, see Canada Post's service alerts online.

The city also reminds the public that ponds and lakes are not open for outdoor skating due to unsafe conditions.

For more updates, check the city's website.

Burnaby's snow advice

  • Shovel and de-ice your sidewalk and driveway
  • Pile snow onto your property or boulevard, not the road
  • Leave one metre between garbage and recycling bins and cars or snowbanks
  • When shovelling out your vehicle, pile the snow on the boulevard or your property, not the road.
