Positivity rates for COVID-19 infections have gone up, according to the latest data released by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).
However, the updated data from Jan. 11 to 17, 2022, shows case rates in the four quadrants dropped as Omicron continues to put a major strain on B.C.'s health-care system.
Yesterday (Jan. 18), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced gyms would gradually re-open on Jan. 20, but all other public health orders were being extended until Feb. 16, including limits on gatherings, events and restaurants.
That round of restrictions was originally announced just days before Christmas on Dec. 21, 2021.
Henry also implemented a new order that requires schools across the province to provide proof of vaccination status for its teachers.
The order applies to all staff across B.C.’s public, independent and francophone schools, and includes sharing how many doses of vaccine an employee has received and when they were vaccinated.
“An employer must request proof of vaccination from each staff member and must keep a record of each staff member’s vaccination status,” wrote Dr. Bonnie Henry in her order.
That information must be held in a way that does not reveal an individual’s identity. In the case of an outbreak or exposure, schools are now required to act as if staff who have not provided proof of vaccination are unvaccinated.
Case rates are new cases per 100,000 people by local health area and community health service area.
