A 28-year-old man was arrested Saturday, Sept. 21, after assaulting a pickleball player in North Burnaby.

A man faces assault charges after a "scary" stranger assault during a pickleball game in North Burnaby this weekend.

Police responded to Confederation Park just after 1:30 p.m. on Saturday for a report of an assault, according to an emailed Burnaby RCMP statement.

"When police arrived, they located and arrested the suspect immediately," the email said. "The suspect allegedly assaulted the victim, including with a glass bottle and other objects that were in the area."

The suspect, a 28-year-old man believed to be about 6'1", was taken to the Burnaby RCMP detachment and now faces a charge of assault with a weapon.

The victim sustained minor injuries, according to police.

Burnaby RCMP told the NOW the men were not known to each other.

A person who said they witnessed the attack posted an account of the incident on Reddit.

They said the victim had been playing pickleball inside the outdoor covered sports box and was attacked by a man who had been off to the side playing music on a speaker.

"Out of nowhere, we hear him completely snap and charge at this smaller guy (maybe 5'6") in the pickleball group," stated the post.

The post said the suspect swore at the man, punched him, beat him with metal poles from the pickleball net and threw glass bottles at him.

"Very scary shit," stated the post.

Burnaby RCMP confirmed the assault had involved pickleball players and a man unknown to them at the sports box.

The Reddit poster did not respond to a request for an interview.

The investigation is ongoing, according to police.
