Burnaby athletes win gold at summer Games

What a year: Burnaby South student Seina Kashima capped a perfect season of soccer with a gold medal at the Canada Summer Games.

Anthony Cusati and Nick Favaro of Burnaby shared B.C's gold medal in men's baseball, defeating Ontario 5-0 in the championship final at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que. last week.

Shortstop Cusati and catcher Favaro were both big stories in the run to Games gold.

Cusati, a 6-2 righthander, finished the competition with a second overall eight runs batted in and was also second on Team B.C. with a .400 batting average, scoring nine runs, while collecting eight hits in seven games.

Favaro hit safely eight times, batted .364, with four runs scored and five RBI.

Both Cusati and Favaro brought in runs in a fiverun, B.C. first inning, while Colton Wood of Victoria went on to pitch a one-hitter, striking out 10 Ontario batters, in the gold-medal final.

B.C. blanked the opposition in its last four games leading to the final, including a 10-0 win over Alberta on Aug. 6. In the win, Cusati drove in four runs off a double and a home run in the two-hitter.

In the semifinal played last Thursday, B.C. bested New Brunswick 7-0 to advance to the final.

Cusati had two hits and scored a run, while Favaro had one RBI and scored a run.

Another Burnaby athlete also shared in a team gold with the women's soccer team.

Grade 11 Burnaby South Secondary student Seina Kashima scored the game-winning gold for B.C. in the first half of a 3-2 victory over Quebec.

Sam Dion, who had two goals in the final, shared the lead in team scoring with Kashima, both with five goals.

B.C. won all five of its matches at the Games, including a comeback 4-2 win over Alberta and a 2-1 win over Ontario to earn a spot in the gold-medal final.

Kashima, who plays striker for the Vancouver Whitecaps prospects girls' team that won the Metro women's and Pacific Coast league titles, recently returned from Sweden, where the 'Caps capped a stellar u-18 season, winning their division at the Gothia

Cup, the largest youth soccer tournament in the world.

"It's really cool being part of the Whitecaps program, they're such a talented group of girls," said Kashima, who has already commited to play varsity soccer at Trinity Western University after graduation. "Finishing (the season) off at the Games was a perfect way to finish."

Stefan Milosevic was also a big winner, taking four bronze medals at the Games.

The Cariboo Hill Secondary student won two individual third-place medals, earning his first podium in the 200-metre butterfly.

Earlier, Milosevic won his first medal with Team B.C.'s 4x200-metre freestyle relay team.

Milosevic also came third in the 200m free, finishing in a dead heat for the silver medal just five one-hundredths of a second behind the runner-up. He also shared a fourth bronze in the 4x100m free relay. Milosevic and B.C.'s 4x50m free relay team were denied a gold medal and a Games record following a disqualification in the final. Milosevic also made the finals in the 100 and 400m free, placing sixth in both races.

Five members of Team B.C. - including Milosevic, Markus Thormeyer, Luke Reilly, Emily Overholt, and James Dergousoff - now head off to the FINA world junior championships, which start in just over two weeks in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

In men's volleyball, Team B.C., including Moscrop grad and former Douglas College libero Jordan Or, defeated Ontario in the bronzemedal final 25-14, 25-13, 18-25, 25-23.

In the women's volleyball final, Alyssa Wolf of Burnaby shared a silver medal, following a 25-12, 25-13, 13-25, 20-25, 9-15 loss to Alberta in the goldmedal match.

St. Thomas More Collegiate wrestler Darthe Capellan shared a silver medal in the team final against Ontario.

Capellan also won an individual silver following a 3-1 loss to Ontario's Phillip Le in the men's 50-kilogram final.

In women's wrestling, STM's Anna Benevoli and Team B.C. just missed a bronze medal following a 28-23 loss to Saskatchewan in the tea competition.

In the women's 70kg placements, Benevoli finished fifth overall with a pin over Nathalie Turenne of Manitoba.

The Summer Games continue through this week before wrapping up on Saturday.
