Burnaby’s Hanif Mawji pushed it to the playdowns before getting bumped at the Boccia International Sports Federation’s (BISFed) 2018 World Boccia championships in Liverpool, England last week.
Mawji was eliminated after the final pool round contest, falling short of advancing to the round of 16.
Brazil’s Guiherme Moraes took advantage of some early opportunities to get ahead of Mawji on the scoreboard, stealing three points off first balls to put the Burnaby competitor in a chasing game.
“Hanif appeared to be low on energy today, having to play first thing in the morning and then the last match of the day, with both being close matches,” said Team Canada head coach Mario Delisle. “However, he will place approximately 20th, which is very close to his current world ranking slot.”
Mawji competes in B1 division, which is for athletes with severe impairment in all four limbs.
Earlier, he began the competition with a big 4-2 win, scoring three points in the third end to take a 4-1 lead and hold on over the final end.
