Head to Stoney Creek on Saturday, May 13 for the Great Salmon Send-Off. It’s happening between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at 2740 Beaverbrook Cres., at the north end of the Stoney Creek Community School grounds, near Lougheed Town Centre. The event usually attracts more than 1,000 people, so make sure you arrive early if you want to release fry into the creek. The salmon arrive onsite around 11 a.m. There will be live entertainment for kids, info booths and more.

Here’s another mother’s day event to take note of. The Save the Mothers’ five-kilometre Mother’s Day Walk is set for May 13 at Central Park. Meet at the parking lot off Kingsway, next to Swangard Stadium, at 9 a.m. The walk raises awareness and support to improve maternal and child health in the developing world. If you’re around Metropolis at Metrotown on Saturday, watch for Canadian Blood Services volunteers. They’ll be talking to shoppers about donating blood, registering as an organ donor, getting swabbed for OneMatch (the stem cell and marrow network) and the benefits of expecting moms donating their cord blood. The awareness campaign is on from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the mall’s Grand Court.
Bird enthusiast george clulow is hosting a five-kilometre trek around Deer Lake on May 13. This tour (6 to 9 a.m.) focuses on listening to our feathered dawn choristers and learning who’s who from their songs. To register, visit burnaby.ca/webreg and use barcode 436893. Cost is $5/person.
